Avalanche warning for region Ofoten Monday 22.04.2019

Danger level 3 - Considerable avalanche danger

Published:
A very complex situation is at hand. Rain will weaken the snowpack also at higher elevations. In the alpine wind slabs from the previous days might still be unstable. The old persistent weak layer may still be triggered after being weakened by the last days raining event.

Avalanche problems

Wet snow (loose snow avalanches)

You can easily trigger avalanches on some steep slopes. Avalanches can get large enough to bury or even kill you (size 2).

Loose snow

Wind drifted snow (slab avalanches)

You can trigger avalanches on some steep slopes. Avalanches can get large enough to bury a car or destroy a small house (size 3).

Poor bonding between layers in wind deposited snow

Wet snow (slab avalanches)

You can easily trigger avalanches on a few steep slopes. Avalanches can get large enough to bury a car or destroy a small house (size 3).

Below you can see a description of the current snow cover information and current weather forecast in the mountains. If your observations deviate greatly from what is described here, the warning will not necessarily apply either. Always make your own judgments or stay away from avalanche terrain.

Snow cover (in Norwegian)

Sunday 21. April 2019

I helgen tok mildværet skikkelig tak i snødekket. Fukten har trengt langt ned og det meste av lagdelinger er fuktet, også de gamle vedvarende svake lag.

Fra slutten av februar har vi et vedvarende svakt lag av kantkorn dypt i snødekket. Laget er trolig mest utbredt over ca 600 moh.

Det har blitt observert flere naturlig utløste våte skred i helgen.

Mountain weather

Sunday 21. April 2019

15 mm precipitation, up to 30 mm in the most exposed areas. Strong breeze from southwest. -3 °C to 1 °C at 1100 m a.s.l. Cloudy.

Monday 22. April 2019

10 mm precipitation, up to 20 mm in the most exposed areas. Breeze from south, changing to strong breeze from the southwest during the afternoon. -3 °C to 4 °C at 1100 m a.s.l. Cloudy.

Advice

The bulletin is a planning tool and may differ from the actual situation. Always make your own evaluation. To be 100 % avalanche safe, avoid all avalanche terrain.

Avalanche risk assessment
