Avalanche forecast for Nord-Troms Thursday 2019-04-18

2
Moderate
Published:

Higher temperatures causes risk of some naturally released avalanches. There is a permanent weak layer deep in the snowpack, but it is probably very difficult to trigger.

Wet snow (slab avalanches)

Water pooling in/above snow layers

Avoid staying for a longer period in avalanche release and run out areas. Wet snow avalanches tend to release spontaneously. Stability decreases when the snow surface gets wet and soft. Timing is important.
3 - Large
Spontaneous release
Isolated steep slopes
Possible

Wet snow (loose snow avalanches)

Loose snow

Be careful in avalanche release and runout areas. Avoid skiing in terrain traps. Timing is important. Stability decreases when the snow surface gets wet and soft. Wet snow avalanches tend to release spontaneously.
2 - Medium
Spontaneous release
Specific steep slopes
Possible

Snow Cover

80 cm in total No snowdrift 0 cm new snow Elevation of new snow 0 masl Wet loose snow Moist Under tregrensen er det fuktig skarelag over mye løs våt snø.

Danger Sign

Recent avalanches Noen ferske små selvutløste skred i området. I brattheng.

Avalanche Danger Assessment

2 Moderate Stabiliteten virker bra. Forecast correct Regional varsel stemmer.

Danger Sign

Avalanche Danger Assessment

2 Moderate Generelt stabilt.

Snow Cover

Wet Snowpack at 130m wet to bottom. Surface layers turning moist at 400-500m.

Danger Sign

Much water in the snow Under 400m

Avalanche Problems

Wet slab avalanche Buried weak layer of faceted snow beneath a crust Easy to trigger 3 - Large E, SE, S, SW, W below 500 masl Water in snow is disintegrating the crust layers and making triggering avalanches on buried, wet facet layers possible.

Avalanche Observation

Could be natural, but there were fresh ski tracks very close to the slide. Convex, unsupported slope, 40 degrees. Previously wind-loaded. Classic avalanche release terrain.

For planning your trip and recognizing avalanche terrain, use maps.

Norway has 1:50 000 maps for the whole country. Maps can be bought at bookstores and sports shops, or printed from the net.

Visit www.ut.no for topographic maps online. For slope angle maps, see NGI slope angel maps ("helning" means slope angle).

Modelled snowpack and historic and current weather information can be found on the webpage senorge.no. This site uses information from the weather stations and interpolate values from the stations for gridded maps.
