Avalanche warning for region Jotunheimen Saturday 23.03.2019

Danger level 3 - Considerable avalanche danger

Published:
The danger increases when the wind picks up. Be careful in lee areas with wind deposited snow, typically behind ridges, ribs and in gullies.

Avalanche problems

Wind drifted snow (slab avalanches)

You can easily trigger avalanches on many steep slopes. Avalanches can get large enough to bury a car or destroy a small house (size 3).

Buried weak layer of new snow

Persistent weak layer (slab avalanches)

Below you can see a description of the current snow cover information and current weather forecast in the mountains. If your observations deviate greatly from what is described here, the warning will not necessarily apply either. Always make your own judgments or stay away from avalanche terrain.

Snow cover (in Norwegian)

Friday 22. March 2019

Mountain weather

Friday 22. March 2019

10 mm precipitation, up to 18 mm in the most exposed areas. Strong breeze from south, changing to gale from the southwest during the afternoon. -9 °C to 0 °C at 1800 m a.s.l. Cloudy.

Saturday 23. March 2019

20 mm precipitation, up to 35 mm in the most exposed areas. Strong gale from west. -11 °C to -5 °C at 1800 m a.s.l. Cloudy.

Advice

The bulletin is a planning tool and may differ from the actual situation. Always make your own evaluation. To be 100 % avalanche safe, avoid all avalanche terrain.

Avalanche risk assessment
